CHELSEA FOOTBALL CLUB - HOME OF THE SEAGULLS

CHELSEA GRIT

1956 - SEASON REVIEW

Tommy New came to the club in 1956 under quite a deal of pressure. He had replaced premiership coach Russell Grambeau who had departed in slightly controversial circumstances and was expected to get results with a team that had suffered a mass exodus of talented players.
He didn’t drink, smoke or gamble which, within the Chelsea domain, may have disqualified him from membership, but at the relatively young age of 26, Tommy was appointed coach.

With a wonderful set of personal values, he set about educating his young team with very good results. In this environment he proved to be the perfect fit, much respected and well liked. A tough hard hitting centre-man, Tom led his team to fifth position, an outstanding result given the resources available. But his greatest achievement during this two year period was his influence as he moulded many young players for future success.
