1958 - SEASON REVIEW

1958 was, by anyone’s standards, a huge year for the club. After four years as secretary, Claude Dowse took the reins as President. In doing so, he was joined by a newcomer in Frank Hepworth as secretary and club stalwart, Ron Park as treasurer.  There were new faces on the committee and the club was quick to set about getting a new coach and producing some performances across the board. It would seem that Claude had tolerated mediocrity for too long. Having enjoyed the success of 1955 he had a strong desire for more and was determined to satisfy that craving.

The coaching position was filled by appointing the best player running around at the time, George Ashman. Ashman had won the Federal best and fairest in 1956 and was an out and out star. He would be the one to lead the club out of the doldrums.

The old rooms were a disgrace. It was time to do something about it. Claude was a builder, after all. They had to be replaced and quick smart. Plans for their replacement were set in motion and involved the Fire Brigade who were very supportive and a financially challenged, but enthusiastic Cricket Club.

Action-man Claude was on the move!
