A lightly built 5’9” back flanker, Dick Gough was ahead of his time. Unlike other close playing backmen he was content to sit twenty or thirty yards off his man and use his exceptional speed and judgement to get the ball or cover his man if necessary.
He was rarely caught out of position and provided the Seagulls with an attacking option across half back, something that was unheard of in those days.
