Australian Sports Foundation - Survey impact Covid19 on Community Sport

24 July 2020
Summary of findings from The Australian Sports Foundation's recent survey on how COVID-19 has impacted community sports.

You have told us that 1 in 4 clubs (approximately 16,000 clubs in total) are concerned their organisation’s will not survive this crisis.

This is a devastation to local community sports clubs, which you may have seen has been picked up by the major news corporations in the past few days. We're working hard to drum up support to help community sports survive the covid-19 health crisis.

Some key points of concern that the research has uncovered:

16,000 clubs are at risk of closure due to COVID-19
The physical and mental health of millions of Australians is under threat
The overall financial support needed by Australia’s 70,000 community clubs is in the region of $1.2 bn
$300m is needed by clubs reporting a risk of closure in the next 3 months

The COVID-19 crisis isn’t just about clubs temporarily being out of action, or sportspeople not being able to compete. Entire communities are at risk. Sport provides physical activity, a sense of identity and social engagement, and enhances physical, mental, and emotional health. It is the lifeblood for many communities. In helping sport survive and thrive, we are helping communities right across Australia.
